Seven Exciting

DBC Happenings in 2020

by Dave & Shelley Burgess

This week we want to share with you seven things we are excited about in 2020!

1. The First #dbcPIRATEcon

It drops in San Diego June 12th-14th, 2020. For years, many of you have asked us to host a conference featuring the great educators and authors we work with at DBC, and we have finally taken the leap. We’re not gonna lie… it’s a bit overwhelming, but we are committed to creating a fantastic experience for all of YOU. We are so thrilled that so many of our authors have agreed to join us - the line up is simply amazing! We could not pull this off without each of them stepping up and making space on their calendars for this event. And… there is no way we could do it without Wendy and Tara - thank you both for all your hard work. We hope you can join us in June! We are SO looking forward to the opportunity to meet so many of YOU...our incredible PLN face to face and in real life!! It will be a highlight of 2020 for us, for sure!

2. Book Releases From Some of Your Favorite Authors

We are so excited about the line up of books we have coming out in 2020! And we are especially thrilled to have some of your favorite authors releasing new books this year… Hope and Wade King are back with their new children’s book, The Wild Card Kids released this past week! Check it out HERE! You can also expect new books from Jimmy Casas, Jennifer Casa-Todd, Christine Pinto, Bethany Petty, and Kim Bearden. Alice Keeler has her newest Google Classroom book hitting the shelves later this spring. Todd Nesloney and Adam Dovico have teamed up and written a GREAT new book about the magic that happens when kids lead. Adam Welcome and Rae Hughart are also working on a project together about what teachers deserve! Ryan McLane and Eric Lowe are also back together working on a new book on parent engagement. AND... a book we have ALL been waiting for and the next book in the PIRATE series… Tech Like a PIRATE written by Matt Miller will be out just in time for your summer read. Spoiler alert… We’ve had a sneak peek, and it is SOOO fantastic!

3. Book Releases Emphasizing Equity, Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, and Social Justice

We are thrilled to be releasing several books on these topics. We are working with some dynamic educators to bring you some powerful resources in this space. We know they will help all of us deepen our understanding of these critical issues and raise the bar for us in how we do our work.  Be on the lookout for a new LeadLAP guide, Lead for Equity, by Rosa Perez-Isiah. Also, LaNesha Tabb and Naomi O’Brien have a fabulous book about the incredible social studies work they do in their classrooms that elevate ALL cultures. Pamela Seda and Kyndall Brown are working on a title to help us better understand what equity looks like in a math classroom, and Amber Coleman-Mortley will share her thoughts with us on Fearlessly Facing Race. And… we expect DBC, Inc.’s very own Marisol Rerucha to release her book on restorative practices before the year is out.

4. Blogging Bonanza

Dave and I have both committed to upping our blogging and content creation game in 2020. You can expect AT LEAST one blog per week from Dave at daveburgess.com and at least once per week from us over at leadlikeapirate.net. I’m also working with Beth Houf on our next book! We expect to have the draft completed by the end of February and then a fall, 2020 release! We have a few other surprises in store for you this year, so stay tuned!

5. Dave's New Program

As we ring in the new year, Dave is thrilled to introduce a new keynote program. He has taken all of his infectious energy and infused it into a program about entrepreneurship. He dives deep into the work he has done to take something that he was deeply passionate about and turn it into a thriving business doing something he loves. The program is inspirational, imminently practical and breaks down the process of how you too can “make your own snow”. He is looking forward to sharing the program with entrepreneurs across the country in 2020. Don’t worry… if you love his Teach Like a PIRATE keynotes and workshops, they aren’t going anywhere. He will continue to spread the TLAP message wherever he can!

6. DBC Speakers

It’s something we don't highlight often enough, but we really should! Did you know that you can book many of your favorite DBC authors to speak through DBC? One of the things we love about our authors is the passion they have for their work and their desire to share that with all of you in any way they can. One way several of them spread their message is through speaking events. Many of them also enjoy doing Google Hangouts with groups doing book studies.

If you are looking for opportunities to connect and learn with DBC authors, let us know! You can check out our 2020 Speaker Line-Up HERE, or simply contact Wendy at Wendy@daveburgessconsulting.com.

Author Opens Store to Give Back

Tom Murray, author of Personal and Authentic (a book from our IMpress line), opens a store and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to  innovative research, treatments, and awareness for those who live in fear every day and suffer from life-threatening food allergies. Wow! This is incredible! Read more about it, below.

Tom Shares Why He Opened the Personal & Authentic Store

We'll never be able to fully describe what it was like running into the ER screaming for an Epi-Pen to save the life of our little girl when she was ten months old. Life changed for us on that day.

Not a day has gone by in the past nine years where we don't think twice about what our little girl eats, knowing that due to the severity of her food allergies, consuming the wrong thing could be fatal. It was something that I wrote about regarding the "Hidden Stories Within" in my new book Personal & Authentic.

Two and a half years ago, Paisley began a new innovative treatment (Oral Immunotherapy - "OIT") to take on her sesame allergy, as one seed of sesame could have taken her life. Over the course of 15 months, she missed 35 days of school for therapy, traveled 10,000 miles, spent 180 hours in the car, and showed more courage than any child should have to during that period. She was brave. She was fearless. She now consumes the equivalent of 2,000 seeds per day to keep her safe.

Today, I open the Personal & Authentic store in her honor, where 100% of the net proceeds will go to benefit the innovative research, treatments, and awareness for those who live in fear every day and suffer from life-threatening food allergies.

I'd love for you to check it out here:
